What is Ozone Therapy & How Does it Work?
During the rise of holistic, alternative medicine, several treatments and protocols contrary to traditional medical literature have come to the forefront. Of course, some are more effective than others, and even more, are being disproven by the day.
With that said, that’s not to suggest some holistic, alternative medicine approaches aren’t valid, they just happen to come with some mainstream controversy.
One of those therapeutic, holistic medicinal approaches to treatment is ozone therapy.
In what follows, we’ll be discussing what ozone therapy is, how it works, and what the benefits are. Moreover, we’ll discuss what the latest research suggests, why it’s so controversial, and what might be the most accurate assessment of this alternative therapy.
So, without further ado, let’s jump right into it!
What is Ozone Therapy?
Before defining ozone therapy, it’s important to understand what ozone is. In short, ozone (O3) is a form of oxygenated gas. Ozone therapy, then, is an alternative medical practice used to treat ailments, diseases, or wounds via a topical administration of ozone to the body.
While this form of treatment is widely debated amongst the medical community, several benefits have been shown via research, from improving immunity to fighting disease.
More research certainly needs to be done on the matter, however, the research that has been presented thus far is promising.
The Benefits of Ozone Therapy
As mentioned in the preface, while the benefits of ozone therapy from a medicinal, therapeutic standpoint are not yet conclusively stated in the literature, below are the potential benefits suggested from the research completed thus far.
In addition, much of the benefits have been anecdotally backed. Although anecdotal evidence isn’t the gold standard, it does hold some merit.
Here are the potential benefits of ozone therapy. Keep in mind that these benefits are preliminary and potential, not guaranteed and promised:
- Relieving symptoms of arthritis
- Cleansing fresh wounds via disinfection
- Boosts the immune system
- Fights disease and viral infection
- Reduces side effects of some cancers
- Reduces the risk of early-onset muscle loss/degeneration
- Reduces risk of diabetes
- Improves quality of life in those with breathing disorders (i.e. COPD)
As you can see, ozone therapy can be used in a variety of circumstances for a variety of reasons to cure a variety of ailments and receive a variety of symptoms. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, though, results of ozone therapy widely vary.
How Does Ozone Therapy Works?
While there’s no doubt about the controversy behind ozone therapy and its suspected benefits, it can’t be denied that ozone therapy has been used for centuries now, and for a reason.
The process of ozone therapy is quite the simple one. By administering the gas atop the body, the ozone itself interacts with the bodily fluids, resulting in the level of oxygen in the body inherently increasing.
The administration of ozone can be executed in several ways.
Below are the most common approaches:
- Administer it topically on the skin
- Blow it into the body
- Spread ozonated water atop the body
- Sit in an ozone-induced sauna.
As you can likely understand, a greater oxygen supply is quite a healthy consequence for several reasons and may actually result in aiding several health conditions and ailments.
Final Thoughts
Although the controversy behind ozone therapy is valid, so too are those who believe in the benefits. There’s no doubt that more research needs to be done on the matter, however, what’s been studied to date is, at the very least, promising in some respects.
The good news is that because the apparent benefits provided by ozone therapy are promising thus far, more research is currently in the works, including but not limited to clinical trials. If you or someone you know is considering ozone therapy as a means of treating a particular ailment, wound, or disease, it’s imperative that you consult with a medical professional beforehand to ensure that it’s the proper path to go down.
Nevertheless, ozone therapy has shown promise, and should continue to do so in the future!
